• Week 12

    March 19 - 25, 2017

    Artistic:

    Orange

Your inspiration this week is orange. Either the color orange or an actual orange. Or both.

This was a fun challenge. In the end I had several different orange-themed images to choose from but this was my favourite.

  • Week 11

    March 12 - 18, 2017

    Technical:

    Spilt Tone

Split Tone is an editing technique where the shadows are toned one color, and the highlights a second color. Split toning is often used with color grading in the media to give a scene a desired look and feel.

Did not love this challenge. Getting the right balance of the different colour and saturation levels of the shadows and highlights was tricky. Definitely a good skill to master and I will have to spend another time playing around with these effects.

  • Week 9

    February 26 - March 4, 2017

    Artistic:

    Still Life

Your inspiration this week is Still Life. A couple of pieces of fruit on a table won't impress in the advanced challenge though... so be really creative.

The images for the previous weeks have seemed a bit dull, so this week I went for a lot of colour. This image was built around a small, brightly coloured dragon toy which I surrounded with leaves, flowers and fruit from the garden.

  • Week 8

    February 19 - 25, 2017

    Technical:

    One Shot

Imagine that it is the last frame on a roll of film and you have to nail it. For this challenge only take one shot. No deleting, no second shot. The honour system is in play.

With the popularity of digital cameras, we are used to taking multiple shot of a particular image, perhaps with only slight variations in angle or exposure. Taking one shot felt odd. Here I stopped at Southlands, a nature reserve along the South Shore. This is the first and only shot I took of this view that leads from the entrance.

  • Week 7

    February 12 - 18, 2017

    Story:

    Forgotten

Abandoned was a very popular week in the original challenge. For the advanced challenge tell the story of something forgotten.

The empty shells of boats - often damaged and then abandoned after severe storms or hurricanes - can be found bobbing in various bays or stranded on rocks and beaches around the island having long been forgotten by their previous owners.

  • Week 6

    February 5 - 11, 2017

    Artistic:

    Candy

A throwback to one of the favourite weeks of the original challenge. Your artistic inspiration this week is candy. Since this is the advanced challenge... you can't actually use candy in the scene.

When the inspiration is candy, your first instinct is to create a scene using the sweet stuff. After considering photographing signs or packaging, I settled on trying to capture the candy-coloured buildings of Bermuda.

  • Week 5

    January 29 - February 4, 2017

    Technical:

    Ten Shots

Shoot 10 shots of the same subject. Each shot should be from a different angle, distance and focal length. Share your favourite image from the set.

I came across a piece of detritus on the beach that to my eye was still beautiful and photographed it in situ. The task required us to choose our favourite image, but I have posted ten shots here. Use the left and right arrows to scroll through to the next photo.

  • Week 3

    January 15 - 21, 2017

    Artistic:

    Land

Your inspiration this week is land. This could be a landscape, or an image inspired by the land in some way.

On an island limited in size, land is a premium. For this challenge, I decided to reconsider what the concept of 'land' means in a densely populated, largely non-agrarian society. I found a deserted agricultural field station with an abandoned wooden greenhouse that was quickly reverting to its natural state. The greenhouse had become overgrown: the orderly rows of plants that had once been carefully cultivated inside of it instead giving way to riotous regrowth and regeneration. I thought this juxtaposition made for an interesting image.

  • Week 2

    January 8 - 14, 2017

    Technical:

    SOC (Straight Out of Camera)

Straight Out of Camera. No Photoshop. Shoot a compelling image and post it without edits. No cheating!

This was a tough one. I can't remember the last time I have taken an image, whether using my SLR or on the phone camera, and not edited it in some way. This image was snapped on the go from a car window and isn't particularly engaging or interesting.

  • Week 1

    January 1 - 7, 2017

    Story:

    Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds is the first compositional rule most photographers learn; but most don't know why they learn it. The rule of thirds is amazing for telling a story. Tell a story using the rule of thirds.

Driving past the St Paul AME church in Hamilton, Bermuda, we noticed that the signage on the building was perfectly framed to satisfy the rule of thirds. While the picture does not at first appear to tell much of a story per se, the recent issue surrounding the institution has been highly controversial  dominating the local news headlines for weeks.
